A little bit of country life, and a big dream.

A little bit of country life, and a big dream.

Hello, and welcome!

I’m Cathy, the person behind The Bee & the Mole, a little independent countryside-inspired gift shop based in rural Suffolk.

If you’d told me a while ago that I’d be sitting here writing my first blog for my own countryside business, I’d probably have laughed, put the kettle on and gone back to whichever animal was causing chaos that particular day!

But here we are.

A life in the Countryside

Country life has always been a big part of who I am.

I’ve been surrounded by animals for as long as I can remember. Growing up, there were horses, dogs, cats, chickens and just about every other creature you could imagine. Animals weren’t simply something we had; they were part of everyday life.

Horses and riding became a huge part of my childhood, and as the years went by, my own children developed that same love. Somehow, without really planning it, country life became something that flowed from one generation to the next.

I’ve always loved the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The early mornings, the changing seasons and those little moments in nature that are so easy to overlook when life gets busy.

My mornings often begin with a drive to my yard to check on the horses. There’s something rather special about arriving early, hearing the birds singing and watching the horses grazing before the day really begins.

Of course, anyone who knows horses will tell you that the peace doesn’t always last! There’s usually one with other ideas, something that needs fixing or a little unexpected drama.

But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

How The Bee & the Mole came to life

I’ve always loved finding thoughtful gifts. Not necessarily expensive things, but those lovely little finds that have a bit of character or simply make someone smile.

Having previously dipped my toes into the world of gifts and retail, I began to realise that what I really wanted was to create something more personal.

Something that reflected my love of the countryside, nature and the animals I’ve grown up with.

And so, the idea of a countryside-inspired gift shop began to take shape.

But what on earth was I going to call it?

Why The Bee & the Mole

I’d been going backwards and forwards over names, trying to find something that felt right.

Then one day, whilst putting the kettle on and looking out of the window, I spotted a bee landing on a flower.

It sounds rather romantic, doesn’t it? But honestly, my first thought was simply, “Ah, the bee!”

The more I thought about it, the more I realised how much I could relate to that little creature.

Always busy, moving from one thing to another, bringing life to the flowers around it. Rather like me, rushing around trying to fit a hundred things into a day!

But then came the mole.

Quietly working away underground, largely unseen, creating tunnels and changing the landscape beneath our feet. Sometimes causing a little disruption along the way, admittedly!

And suddenly, the two seemed to fit together.

The bee, busy above ground, full of energy and life.

The mole, working beneath the surface, representing all those unseen efforts that go into building something from the ground up.

In a funny sort of way, they reminded me of the two sides of creating a business. The exciting things everyone sees and the endless work that happens quietly behind the scenes.

And so, The Bee & the Mole was born.

A name inspired by two little countryside creatures, each with their own part to play.

It felt a little different, a little unusual and, most importantly, it felt like me.

My dream  for The Bee & the Mole

So, what do I hope The Bee & the Mole will become?

Quite simply, I’d love it to be one of those little shops that people remember.

The sort of place you think of when you’re looking for a birthday present, a thoughtful thank-you gift or perhaps just something lovely to treat yourself to.

We’ve all had those moments when life gets away from us. Suddenly you remember it’s your auntie’s birthday, your cousin is turning 40 or there’s a special occasion coming up and you haven’t even begun to think about a present.

And sometimes the last thing you want to do is get in the car, drive into town and spend hours searching the shops.

As much as I believe our high streets deserve our support, I also understand that life is busy.

I’d love The Bee & the Mole to become somewhere you can visit from the comfort of your own home, perhaps with a cup of tea in hand, knowing you’ll find something a little different, carefully chosen and full of character.

From countryside-inspired gifts and charming home accessories to little treats and thoughtfully put-together gift boxes, I want it to be a place where you can find something worth giving — or keeping!

Most of all, I’d love it to become a name people know, trust and return to.

A little independent countryside shop with a big heart.

Welcome to the Country Journal

And that brings me to The Country Journal.

I wanted to create a space where I could share more than just the things you’ll find in the shop.

With my children now grown up, I’ve reached a stage in life where I want to spend more time doing the things I genuinely love. The Bee & the Mole is a chance to bring my love of the countryside, animals and thoughtful gifts together in a way that feels very much my own.

And I thought it might be rather lovely to share some of that journey along the way.

There’ll be stories from everyday life, introductions to some of the rather mischievous characters who share it with me, seasonal inspiration, gift ideas and little glimpses behind the scenes as the business grows.

Between the horses, chickens, dogs and a rather unusual collection of other creatures, there’s certainly no shortage of stories!

There’ll be peaceful moments too, from watching the wildlife around the pond to enjoying the changing seasons in our little corner of Suffolk.

I don’t have all the answers, and I’m still learning as I go. But I think there’s something rather lovely about starting a new chapter in life, following an idea and seeing where it takes you.

So whether you’re here because you love the countryside, you’re looking for a thoughtful gift or you’ve simply stumbled across my little corner of Suffolk, I hope you’ll feel welcome.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure. I’m so glad you’re here.

With love from the Suffolk countryside,

Cathy x
